Home Heating 101: Get The Most Out Of Your Heating Unit With Tonna Mechanical

Proper maintenance will help you extend the life of your heating unit. Learn everything you need to do in order to get the most out of your heating unit.

Don’t endure a harsh, cold winter season without a heating unit that’s in tip-top shape. When it comes to home heating, maintenance throughout the year can prevent stress and provide additional years of heated comfort for you and your family. All systems vary, but when properly maintained, a furnace heating system can last 15 to 20 years and a boiler unit can last up to 30 years.

Do-It-Yourself Home Heating Maintenance Tips

Keep your heating unit in tip-top shape in between heating tune ups with these do-it-yourself maintenance tips:

  • Clean your heating unit with a vacuum or a soft bristled brush. Before cleaning or working on your unit, be sure that the unit is turned off to avoid injury or danger.
  • Change the filter in your furnace every 1 to 3 months. There are many filter options available but be sure to check your units’ manual to ensure that you are replacing the filter with a correct one.
  • Be sure to call a professional for maintenance tips that require more in-depth knowledge of heating systems.

Repair vs. Replace

Knowing whether to spend your money to repair or replace your heating unit can be a hassle if you don’t know much about heating units. Here are three questions to answer that will help you decide whether to repair or replace your furnace unit.

  1. How old is your furnace unit? If your furnace is more than 15 years old, it is time to consider replacing your unit with a new one. The average lifespan of a furnace unit is 18 years, so as that time approaches it may be more cost-efficient to replace your unit rather than spend the money on costly repairs.
  1. Have you noticed a change in your utility bills? Keep an eye on your utility bills and compare them each month. If you see a drastic change in your bills than it may be time to replace your heating unit. Older furnace units are not as efficient as they were when they were first installed, therefore it may be more cost-efficient to replace your unit rather than repairing it.
  1. How much will the furnace repair cost? In the end, a large part of your decision on whether to repair or replace your heating unit will come down to cost. If the cost of your repair will be at least 50% of the cost of a new furnace, than get a new furnace instead of spending money towards a furnace that is not going to last much longer. The math changes when your furnace is older than 15 years. If the repair costs are 25% of the cost of a new furnace, it is more cost-efficient to spend your money towards a new system.

Be sure to do plenty of research on your current heating unit, the cost of repairs, and the cost of a new unit before making a final decision. It’s not worth costly repairs on a furnace that has—at best—only a few more seasons left in it.
