Noises Your Furnace Can Make and Why
Bangs, Rattles and Squeals. Oh, My!
It’s normal for your furnace to make a bit of noise. In fact, if your furnace is making no noise at all, then it probably isn’t working! Your system’s ductwork can make small popping noises and the blower will also make noise as it hums along. But if your system sounds like it’s ready to take off, don’t let the noise fall on deaf ears!
We’ve spent years examining heaters and offering heating repair in Kasson, MN, and throughout the Rochester area. So, when it comes to furnaces, we speak their language. We’re going to share the different sounds your furnace can make and, more importantly, what they mean.
Breaking Down the Sounds
What you hear can often help determine the problem. Here are some of the noises your furnace can make and why:
Loud scraping: Do you hear what sounds like metal rubbing against metal? This can indicate a problem with the blower wheel. The wheel might be broken, displaced or loose. Or, another component of your furnace might have lodged itself into the wheel. Before the problem worsens, call our technicians to repair your system and preserve its moving parts.
Whistling: A dirty air filter can often cause whistling noises. Are you changing the air filter every month during the winter? Be sure to clean or replace the air filter regularly to prevent debris buildup. Not only will debris cause your system to run inefficiently, but it also will have a negative effect on your indoor air quality.
Loud banging: Air and fuel mix in your furnace’s burner to create heat. But when the burner is full of dirt, it will delay the burner from igniting and cause a gas buildup. When the burner does finally ignite, all that gas creates a small explosion that sounds like a loud banging noise. These explosions can damage the heat exchanger, leading to expensive repair work and even carbon monoxide leaks. Another cause of loud banging noises can be your system’s air ducts expanding and contracting, which can stem from undersized ducts, faulty ducts or a dirty air filter. Whatever the case may be, don’t take these noises lightly. It’s likely that something is wrong with your system and needs to be examined by a trained professional.
Clicking noises: If your furnace makes a clicking noise, something is likely wrong with the ignition system. An improper mixture of gas and air can be causing the ignition to fail. Another possibility is that your system has a broken gas valve. Our technicians can quickly determine the cause of the clicking and get your system working properly again.
Squealing noises: Apart from hurting your ears, squealing noises say that something’s wrong with your furnace. The noise can be caused by a failing blower belt or power motor. Or, the shaft bearings may need to be lubricated. Squealing noises aren’t as urgent as the other noises listed above. But they’re certainly something you’ll want to fix sooner rather than later.
During an annual maintenance tune-up, we tighten and lubricate your furnace’s components to keep them working properly. Squealing noises often mean that you haven’t given your system enough TLC. But when you join our Comfort Club, we’ll do all the work for you!
