What to do if your AC stops working

AC DIY Fixes

You get home from work and it’s much warmer than it should be, and your AC is just not kicking on.

What do you do? Here are 4 simple checks you can run through before giving us a call and having a repair technician out to your home.

Step 1: Check your electrical switch

Most furnaces have an electrical switch right next to the system in the mechanical room which is commonly bumped and turned off on accident.  Take a quick look and make sure it’s in the “on” position.

Step 2: Scan the breaker box

Each of your home appliances should be on their own breaker.  Quickly scan down the rows and make sure your furnace switch hasn’t tripped and is in the “off” position.

Step 3: Check your air filter

If the filter hasn’t been changed recently it can clog up and get dirty limiting the airflow to the furnace and causing it to shut down.  Open up your air filter and if it looks dirty or clogged make sure to replace it as soon as possible.

Step 3: Check the outdoor unit for obstructions

Head outside and make sure nothing is obstructing your outdoor unit and no electrical disconnects have happened.  Clear away any weeds or other plants that might be overgrown and causing issues with air flow.

If you go through all these steps and are having any of these issues…

  • Limited airflow
  • Warm instead of cool air blowing from vents
  • Water leaks
  • Strange noises
  • Inaccurate thermostat
